When Velvet Magnolia opened in 2021, Hollyn was still in high school, watching Velvet Magnolia come to life. A few years later, she’s helping shape the next chapter of the business through content creation, styling, and fresh ideas.

As Velvet Magnolia grows into a new location, expands its services, and launches a refreshed online experience, Hollyn’s story feels like a perfect reflection of the journey. We sat down with her to talk about what it means to grow alongside Velvet Magnolia.

Q&A with Hollyn

Q. What’s your earliest memory of Velvet Magnolia?
A. One of my earliest memories was opening day. My girlfriends and I got to work the first few sale days together, and we were all trying to sell the most items. I remember watching the Velvet Magnolia vision come to life and getting to show the town fresh design talent.

Q. How has your role changed over the years?
A. In high school, I helped wherever I was needed. Tagging inventory, unpacking shipments, and trying to have a say wherever I could. Over time, I started assisting with events, customer service, and eventually social media. This summer, I’ve really taken the lead on our online presence by creating content and helping shape how we tell the Velvet Magnolia story.

Q. What are you loving most right now?
A. I love creating social media content that feels fresh and authentic. It’s fun to capture our style and personality in a way that connects with customers and shows them what makes Velvet Magnolia special.

Q. You’ve been involved in some exciting new launches. What’s been your favorite part?
A. I’ve helped curate our social media for product launches, photographed new arrivals, and styled content for upcoming campaigns. I’m especially excited about our seasonal collections. Christmas has always been a staple in our home, and I just love the magic the holidays bring.

Q. Where do you find inspiration?
A. I’m inspired by timeless classics and small unexpected details. I also love following other small businesses from Texas and beyond. It feels like we’re part of a supportive creative community that shares ideas and lifts each other up.

Q. How has this internship shaped your future plans?
A. I’ve learned how important it is to understand your brand’s voice and communicate it clearly. Working at Velvet Magnolia this summer inspired me to chase my dream of opening an online boutique, and that’s exactly what I plan to do.

Q. Three words to describe where Velvet Magnolia is headed?
A. Fresh. Timeless. Growing. And McAllen, so soon.

Q. Any advice for other girls starting out?
A. Don’t be afraid to start small and learn every part of the process. Ask questions, try new things, and remember your ideas matter even when you’re just getting started. I used to be scared my ideas wouldn’t be heard, but I surprised myself. I think I even surprised the amazing team I worked with this summer.

Looking Ahead

This summer, Hollyn interned with the marketing team and had the opportunity to watch a number of brand initiatives take shape from behind the scenes.

Hollyn is currently building her own online boutique, set to launch this fall. The time she spent immersed in Velvet Magnolia’s day-to-day marketing helped give her the confidence and clarity to bring that vision to life. Q: The Yturria name carries so much weight in South Texas history. What does that legacy mean to you?
A: Every generation in my family has worked on the ranch at some point in time. After working on the ranch for 23 years myself, I realized how difficult it was to find hunting and fishing clothes that I actually liked and was proud to wear. This brand is my way of honoring our history while filling a gap I saw in the market—creating timeless, practical goods that feel just as good to wear as they do to live in.

Q: What inspired the creation of H. Yturria Ranch Mercantile?
A: I wanted to build something that respected the grit and beauty of ranch life while elevating the products we use every day. Everything in the shop is crafted with that balance in mind—heritage-quality goods that feel connected to the past, but are made to be lived in now.

Q: What kinds of products can people expect from the collection?
A: We’re launching with apparel, accessories, and home goods—each one inspired by the land, the lifestyle, and the craftsmanship that’s been part of our family for over 160 years. These are pieces made to last: rugged, refined, and rooted in South Texas tradition.

Q: How has conservation played into your family’s story?

Whether you’re setting the table for a backyard hangout, lounging on the porch with your people, or filling the cooler before a beach day down at Padre, the drinks we serve say just as much as the setting we serve them in.

So grab your favorite glass (bonus points if it’s from Velvet Magnolia), and let’s talk about our go-to drinks for every kind of Southern get-together:

1. Ranch Water (The Unofficial Drink of South Texas)

Crisp, light, and made for porch nights.

What you need:

• Topo Chico (it has to be Topo)

• Fresh-squeezed lime

• Tequila

• Tajín on the rim, always

We love serving this one in a tall glass with a salt + chili rim and a slice of lime on the side. It’s refreshing, unfussy, and practically a lifestyle here.

2. Sangria Sundays

Our answer to “What do I bring?” when someone’s hosting.

What you need:

• Red wine (we like a fruity Rioja)
